How taxis work on Cozumel

All taxis have the official rate sheet and must show it to you if you ask. The rate is by zones, not miles.

The taxi union also offers island tours, limo service, vans, and handicapped van service.

Taxis are not allowed to pick up at the airport; they can only drop off. They have an official rate list for rides from hotels to the airport that supersede the zone rate. A ride from a hotel in town to the airport is 102 Pesos. From a hotel in the north hotel zone to the airport is 200 Pesos. Rides from hotels in the south zone range from 200 to 400 pesos, depending on how far south they are.

Below are the official Taxi Union rates, approved in 2016 and still in effect. All fares listed include up to four passengers. Luggage is free. All fares are listed in Pesos. NOTE: If you pay in USD, the Taxi Union’s exchange rate is significantly worse than the bank rate.

Surcharges to add on to regular posted fares:

* Taxi called by phone: add $8 pesos
* Taxi pick-up from downtown ferry pier, supermarket, or taxi stand: add $8 pesos
* Night service charge (midnight to 6AM): add $12 pesos
* Pick up from a bar: add $12 pesos
* Wait time in town: $140 pesos/hour
*Taxi by the hour (IN TOWN) $200 pesos

Taxis from the cruise ship piers have their own pricing system in USD, not pesos. The cost includes up to 4 passengers. For 5 passengers the cost of the ride rises about 45%. For 6 to 8 passengers (in a van), the cost of the ride doubles.

From International Pier to Puerta Maya Pier is $8

Red, 2-Person Motocabs

Currently, a fleet of small, red, 2-person motocabs are servicing the city. They have no official government permissions as of yet, and are sometimes detained by police.

Cozumel Collectivo (shared van) Systems

Collectivos

Collectivos are shared vans (combis) operated by the taxi union that run along fixed routes with fixed stops. Prices are by the ride, not by the stop or distance. Non-scheduled stops are not allowed. Routes are marked on the van’s windshields. All routes begin and end at Chedraui Plaza. They begin running at 7 AM and the last run is at 9 PM, daily, but Sundays the service may be a little delayed, as the supervisors have Sundays off. No animals, smoking, or consumption of alcohol allowed aboard. Cost is 10 pesos adults, 4 pesos children under 3 years and 5 pesos for students with school ID and seniors with INAPAN ID. Supervisors are on hand M-Sat at stops at Chedraui and the stop at Juarez x Av. 90. There is always an English-speaking supervisor at Chedraui. The main office (Transporte) is in the Palacio Municipal, ground floor, and open 9am to 3pm, M-F.
